Jeff Tang is a composer working in a diverse range of creative settings including music theatre, dance, film scoring, and songwriting. His work has been produced and performed in Berkeley, London, Minneapolis, New York, and La Jolla, and he has performed at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center.
Born outside Philadelphia and raised in Southern California, the foundation of his musical background comes from the amalgam of studies in composition, classical piano and guitar from a young age, and a constant ear towards popular and world music. He received his BA double-majoring in music and political science from the University of California, Berkeley, and his MFA from the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he was an NYU Graduate Opportunity Fellow.
His musical Passage of Dreams, a triptych with aerial choreography with playwright/lyricist Katie Baldwin Eng, premiered in Minneapolis to rave reviews. Called "ambitious, gorgeous", and "deeply evocative", the piece has been hailed as "a triumph of small, intimate, song-based theatre" and was named one of the Twin Cities' Top 10 shows of 2009 (CityPages).
In 2007, Jeff spent three months in Buenos Aires, Argentina studying tango piano with German Martinez at the Orquesta Escuela de Tango Emilio Balcarce, and he has published articles on the guardia joven movement in modern tango orchestras in Time Out Buenos Aires and Issue One magazine in the UK.
As an educator, Jeff served as the founding administrator to launch the Clive Davis Department of Recorded Music at New York University and spent eight months in Madrid, Spain, as a certified Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) instructor. For several years he taught the course "The History and Culture of American Musical Theatre" as an adjunct instructor in the undergraduate Department of Drama at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.
Jeff has received commissions from the NYU Write/Act Festival and Theatre Latte Da in Minneapolis, and has been invited into the New Dramatists Composer-Librettist Studio and the PlayLabs Festival at the Playwrights Center. He is the recipient of the Graduate and Professional Opportunity Fellowship at New York University, the Mary Nunez Souza Music Award, and is a member of the Dramatists Guild.
