A 2-day summit at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC designed to illustrate the power of music in helping us navigate the “new normal” we’ve been thrust into after two years of pandemic. Hosted by soprano Renée Fleming and Dr. Francis Collins, former director of the National Institutes of Health, the summit convened a concert featuring a roster of world-class artists in performance and conversation with music therapists, researchers, and scientists, including esperanza spalding, Eric Whitacre, Regina Carter, Dessa, Michela’s Love Movement, the Children’s Chorus of Washington, Howard University’s Afro Blue, violin prodigy Caesar Sant, and U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy.
The concert was followed by a full day of free activations around music and mental health at the REACH facility, featuring panel discussions with broadcaster/writer Clemency Burton-Hill, Radiolab’s Molly Webster, leaders from the Black Music Therapy Network, Latin American Music Therapy Network, Darkness RISING Project, and members of the NIH. Music workshops with Eric Whitacre x Afro Blue, esperanza spalding, and Grammy-winning musician and activist Quetzal Flores were followed by a premiere film screening of MUSIC VETS with a director Q&A.
